This week, the Carolina Panthers fired general manager Dave Gettleman. Of course, former Panthers such as Steve Smith Sr. and DeAngelo Williams didn’t mind the news, but it was a surprise move with it being so close to training camp.
It was surprise even to head coach Ron Rivera, who was asked why Gettleman was fired. “I’m the wrong person to ask,” Rivera said. (Read the story at CBSSports.com)
Former Panthers GM Marty Hurney will take over as the interim GM in Carolina, while the team looks for a permanent replacement.
This is a new trend in the NFL. The Redskins parted ways with Scot McCloughan in March, the Bills let go of Doug Whaley in April, the Chiefs fired John Dorsey in June, and now the Panthers waved goodbye to Gentleman.
