Adams shows out, team awaits word on Abbrederis

By Marques Eversoll

Through the first week of his first training camp, Packers second-round pick Davante Adams had been relatively quiet. Adams showed flashes of what prompted the Packers to pick him in the second round of May’s draft, but he certainly hadn’t been able to get out of Jarrett Boykin’s shadow behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb.

Friday morning was different.

In different portions of 11-on-11, Adams caught three touchdowns; each score coming off a different route. First, he beat Antonio Dennard on a skinny post on the right side of the field and caught the ball just before the safety could recover. Then, he caught a short score when backup quarterback Matt Flynn identified a blitz, which left Adams without much resistance between him and the endzone. Then, Adams turned cornerback Jumal Rolle around in the endzone and caught a jump ball in the back of the end zone.

It was a training camp hat trick for the rookie.

“Davante had a good day today,” Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said. “He definitely has that ability to separate and be explosive. He’s strong at the point, as far as catching the football. I really like him.”

In Green Bay, Adams faces the tall order of replacing his mentor, James Jones, who spent the first seven years of his NFL career with the Packers before signing with the Oakland Raiders this past offseason. Jones is listed at 6-1, 200; Adams goes about 6-1, 212. Your eyes will tell you they have similar builds.

Among general manager Ted Thompson’s successful second and third-round picks at the position, Jones was the most successful in his rookie year, totaling 676 receiving yards in his rookie year. Jennings (632) was a close second, Cobb (375) and Nelson (366) were a notch below in terms of year one production.

It’s an adjustment for a rookie at any position to come into the NFL and to contribute, but the receiver position presents a different set of obstacles.

“You need time, you need reps,” McCarthy said of his young receivers. “Aaron and the whole quarterback room, it’s obviously a primary focus of what they do each and every day, spending time with those guys, talking … They just need as much time as possible together.”

Off the field, Adams’ fellow rookie Jared Abbrederis, the fan favorite and former University of Wisconsin standout, missed practice with a knee injury. Throughout practice, it was floating around on social media that Abbrederis may have suffered a torn ACL, which would likely sideline him for the entire 2014-15 season.

“Jared (Abbrederis) has a knee,” Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said. “That’s really all the information I have. We’ll see. I’ll get more when I get with Pepper (Burruss) and Pat McKenzie.”

Asked specifically whether or not Abbrederis has an ACL injury, McCarthy dodged the rumors.

“I just answered the question,” McCarthy said. “I haven’t sat down with the medical staff. Right now, he has a knee. He completed practice yesterday.”

More information on Abbrederis is sure to come, as the Packers’ training camp battle at wide receiver heats up in August.
