This year’s Super Bowl is making history by being outdoors and in the northern part of the United States, meaning, there is the possibility for some weather. This has drawn outrage from many people around the country; how dare they make football players determine the best team in any kind of weather? Last time I checked, football is about playing on the “gridiron” not matter the conditions, by “gladiators” and some cold weather and some snow is outrageous? Really?
Why not let the two best teams square off in less than perfect weather, isn’t the point of the Super Bowl to determine the best team, not the best team in perfect conditions. Right now the temperature for Sunday is predicted to between 28 and 35 with the chance of some light snow. This is how football is supposed to be played, in the elements.
For crying out loud, people take shots at soccer for not being a “real” sport because players are soft. Last year the US Men’s team played in snow for a qualifier and there were no complaints. In fact, the reaction was the opposite, people loved it, it brought something new to the table and forced teams to adjust and overcome. If the two best teams in the NFL cannot adjust to snow and cold weather, do they really deserve to be in the game in the first place?
Sure, the cold is an inconvenience for the night life and events around New York surrounding the game, but saying it is unfair for the players is absurd. Both teams play in the northern part of the United States, both teams played a majority of their games outdoors, if they couldn’t play in this kind of weather, they wouldn’t be here.
Winning the Super Bowl is about being great, and part of that is overcoming all obstacles to get the win. Weather is another one of those obstacles that the Broncos and Seahawks will have to overcome this Sunday; and when all is said and done, the weather will not be the reason one of them lost.
