Teams must have their rosters down to 53 players by 5:00pm CDT Saturday. And after losing running back DuJuan Harris for the season with a knee injury, the Green Bay Packers are bringing former Jets running back Joe McKnight in for a workout, according to Mike Garafolo via Twitter.
Currently, the Packers appear ready to hand the lead role over to rookie Eddie Lacy. But behind the 230-pound bruiser, a cloud of uncertainty hangs over the head of fellow rookie Johnathan Franklin, as well as Alex Green and James Starks.
Prior to Harris injury, Starks looked as good as gone, but that may not be the case anymore. If the team ultimately signs McKnight, that could end the Starks Experiment in Green Bay.
If the team ultimately decides to sign McKnight, that brings wide receiver Jeremy Ross’ future further into question. With Randall Cobb likely being relieved of his return duties, Ross has been the frontrunner to take over as the primary return man this summer.
McKnight, 25, averaged 27.5 yards per kick return last season, including a 100-yard touchdown. In 2011, McKnight averaged 31.6 yards per return, capped off by a 107-yard score.
The snowball effect from signing McKnight could lead to Ross’ departure and undrafted rookie Tyrone Walker landing on the 53-man roster as the No. 5 receiver. Otherwise, Walker may be headed to the practice squad.
